King Bladud’s Pigs

Sulis pigIn 2008 a herd of pigs appeared on the streets of Bath for the summer. When autumn came, one little piggy got left behind!

Street sculpture exhibitions are an established fundraising mechanism for charities. In Bath we had the pigs and then lions the following year. In Bristol we have had gorillas and then Gromits, from ‘Wallace and Gromit‘, in recent years. The sculptures are sponsored by local companies, decorated by local artists or celebrities, and then auctioned at the end of the exhibition. The Bath pigs were auctioned to raise money to open the Two Tunnels cycle route.

This particular pig is called Sulis and his owners decided to keep him on permanent display after the auction. Lucky for me – I am very fond of the pigs. It just so happens that I met T [my husband] at a party to celebrate the project.
